Excellent product.

As a MAC User and small business owner I was looking for a simple user friendly product that i could do my returns on and this is it. Great product and any questions I have asked have been responded to by the developer by return of email. it should be noted that I have been an Apple user for 15 years and this is only the 3rd review I have done. in all that time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of our frequently asked questions

The only data that is sent to HMRC is your VAT Return totals. That is the 9 figures that are required to complete a VAT Return.
Making Tax Digital requires that you keep digital records, however these records are not used or read by this app.
Unfortunately not. Making Tax Digital dictates that all records must be kept digitally and digital calculations must be used to calculate your VAT Return figures.
If you have your own method of calculating your VAT Figures, you can use a simple spreadsheet to import them into the app.

If you need any help with this, please drop us an email and we will help you.
A VAT Return consists of the following 9 fields:
  1. VAT due in this period on sales and other outputs
  2. VAT due in the period on acquisitions of goods made in Northern Ireland from EU Member States
  3. Total VAT due (the sum of boxes 1 and 2) *
  4. VAT reclaimed in the period on purchases and other inputs (including acquisitions in Northern Ireland from EU member states)
  5. Net VAT to be paid to Customs or reclaimed by you (Difference between boxes 3 and 4) *
  6. Total value of sales and all other outputs excluding any VAT. Include your box 8 figure.
  7. Total value of purchases and all other inputs excluding any VAT. Include your box 9 figure.
  8. Total value of dispatches of goods and related costs (excluding VAT) from Northern Ireland to EU Member States
  9. Total value of acquisitions of goods and related costs (excluding VAT) made in Northern Ireland from EU Member States
*Will be calculated automatically by the app if left empty

Any field that you do not have a value for (eg. Trade with the EU) you simply fill with 0
Some fields must be entered as whole pounds, rounded down to the nearest. The app will do this for you.
It does not matter. If you already have a spreadsheet that calculates your VAT Return totals, then great.
The only requirement is that all 9 VAT totals are on the same sheet/page.
When you load your spreadsheet into the app, it will ask you to enter the cell numbers for each VAT total (eg. C1, C2, C3...). So as long as they are all in the same sheet/page, the app will pull them from the cell you tell it.
HMRC will only accept a positive number for box 5. They look at boxes 3 & 4 to see if you are due a refund or need to make a payment.
If box 3 is greater than box 4 you need to make a payment.
If box 4 is greater than box 3 you are due a refund.

On the final submission page you will be shown the total Due or Refund
The easiest way to send a spreadsheet to the app on iOS, is to email it to yourself. Once you receive the email on your iOS device, tap to open the spreadsheet, then tap the share button (a square with an arrow), then look for the VAT MTD app in the list of apps you can share the file with (you may need to press the More button to view all apps). When you tap the app, it will open the VAT MTD app and show the imported file at the top in a green bar.
Don't panic! I am more than happy to help you with detailed step by step instructions. Just send me an email asking for help. If you do this from within the app by pressing the support button, it will also provide me with some basic information, otherwise please let me know as much details as possible eg. What device are you using (Mac, iPhone, iPad)? Have you previously subbmited VAT Returns and if so, how do you usually calculate your figures?
Yes. The MacOS app currently supports MacOS versions all the way back to 10.11 however in late 2022 when MacOS 14 is released, unfortunately, the minimum MacOS we can support with future builds will be 10.13
Anyone that has previously downloaded the app on MacOS less than 10.13 will still be able to download the last working version from the App Store. However new users will only be able to download the app if they are running MacOS 10.13 or later.
Yes. The iOS app currently supports iOS versions all the way back to iOS 9 however in late 2022 when iOS 16 is released, unfortunately, the minimum iOS we can support with future builds will be iOS 11
Anyone that has previously downloaded the app on iOS less than 11 will still be able to download the last working version from the App Store. However new users will only be able to download the app if they are running iOS 11 or later.
When you click the login button, for your safety and security the app passes the login flow to Safari. This means the app has no way of seeing your login details (why would we want to) and also allows you to use the Safari password manager. There are some bugs in some versions of MacOS were Safari fails to open the login window. Most of the time this can be fixed by Quitting Safari (Cmd+Q) and reopening it. Then try the login button again.

Alternatively, and also in cases you use another browser, you can select "Use Legacy Login" from the Support menu at the top of the screen to allow the app to handle the login flow.
The app is free to download from the Apple App Store but requires a subscription to submit your VAT Return to HMRC.
The subscription is charged to your Apple ID by Apple, which means you can easily manage and cancel your subscription from within your Apple ID settings.
Due to regional App Store differences and taxes, you can view the exact costs by downloading the app and clicking the Subscription button, but as a general guide and for those in the UK here's a screenshot of the subscription page from within the app.
prices
Your subscription transaction is between you and Apple. The price does include VAT and Apple send out a VAT receipt a couple of days after purchase. Keep an eye on your Inbox.
There are a few things that can stop an In App Purchase from working:
  • Firewalls and Antivirus programs can interfere with communications, and to cut down on fraud Apple don't let these communications through. Please try disabling any Firewall and completely disable any Antivirus software you are running.
  • When making the subscription purchase, you must be logged into the App Store with the same Apple ID that downloaded the app to your Mac. If you want to purchase using a different Apple ID you must delete the app, sign in to the App Store with the account you want to use, then re-download the app under that Apple ID.
  • Some old versions of MacOS have App Store bugs that won't be fixed by Apple. Quite often you can overcome them by following this process:
    • Delete the app from your Applications folder
    • Open the App Store app and Sign Out from the App Store
    • Reboot your Mac
    • Open the App Store app and Sign In with your Apple ID
    • Download the VAT MTD app
    • If you have previously made a subscription, press the Restore Purchases button. Otherwise, try and make your purchase again.
The App Store treats the MacOS and iOS apps as completely different/independant apps, so a subscription on one is not usable on the other. Saying that, you only need the subscription for a final submission to HMRC, so you are more than welcome to use the app on both platforms to view your VAT Returns and get reminders while using just one platform to make your submissions.
Subscriptions are managed by Apple through your AppleID. You can view any active or previous Apple subscription through your App Store account or by clicking one of the following links:
